[Editor's note] Birds can, indeed, smell. At least, that is, the ones we've come across. Usually Melvin starts crying out as he smells food cooking, although technically speaking this could also be a response to certain sound cues.

There's some subtle foreshadowing to the plot-logic to the second panel. Of course, we've said too much already.
