Probiotics can be beneficial for your starling bird during a molt, after administering any type of medication, and any other time they experience stress. You can’t overdose with a probiotic. Probiotics are simply a boost for the good gut flora and helps to strengthen the bird’s health and immune system.
Additionally, antibiotics often play havoc with the good gut flora. As a result, it’s helpful to give probiotics to give your starling bird’s immune system a boost. However, you don’t want to give them while administering any antibiotics as this can result in megabacteria (Avian Gastric Yeast, or AGY).
Once your bird’s course of antibiotics is complete, you can give probiotics for a couple of weeks afterwards. The one we use is Avi-Culture-2-Plus. Sprinkle on your bird’s food like a powdered doughnut each day.
Regardless of what you choose, avoid any probiotics that doesn’t require refrigeration. The probiotic organisms do not maintain viability for very long without refrigeration, and there’s no way of knowing how long the product has been sitting on the shelf.
For probiotic benefit, you can also pick up some fresh yogurt (preferably from a health food store) and see if your starling bird will eat a little every hour.
